The UAE humanitarian institutions implemented several activities and programs in Socotra Governorate during the days of the blessed month of Ramadan, all of which aimed at improving the general situation of the island and its people, enhancing social stability and helping them face the requirements of modern life.
Below we review the most prominent activities that had a positive impact on the Socotra community.
Electricity
The effect of the uninterrupted electricity supply during the month of Ramadan and the days of Eid Al-Fitr was good for the community on the island, as it contributed to creating an atmosphere of faith for citizens and overcoming the obstacles and difficulties they were facing, in addition to providing many of the citizens’ living and living requirements with ease.
Potable Water
The Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation ends the suffering of the people after inaugurating the water desalination plant in Qalansiyah, the second largest city in Socotra Governorate.
The intervention of Khalifa Foundation in solving the problem of the city residents and the establishment of a modern desalination plant to provide fresh, healthy and pure water to all the city’s residents on a daily and continuous basis created peace and satisfaction among the community in the city of Qalansiyah and ended their suffering in fetching water by means of transportation and tankers that cost them sums of money during the past years.
The station operates 24 hours/ day, pumping, purifying and pumping water to the large reservoir at a rate of 280,000 liters per day, and distributes it to the city.
Household Gas
The UAE humanitarian teams made tangible efforts during the holy month of Ramadan to deliver household gas to various regions and villages of Socotra and its residential centers to meet the population’s need for the material and secure their needs during the month and Eid.
The UAE humanitarian efforts in finding the material without any difficulties or troubles were of great importance to the family, who obtained what they needed without hindrances, as well as other importance to the natural environment and its rare trees that were spared from excessive logging in the event of a gas outage.
Iftar Initiative
Since the first day of the blessed month of Ramadan, the initiative to break the fast was launched, and its meals were distributed. During the first half of the month, the number of meals reached 500 ready-made meals for those fasting on a daily basis, before the quantity was raised to 800 meals on the 15th of Ramadan, which are distributed near the Candles Tour in front of the College Society and Majlis of Sultan Ali Isa bin Afrar.
The initiative contributed to providing ready-made Iftar meals to passersby since the first day of the blessed month.
Holy Quran Competition
During the holy month of Ramadan, the Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation organized the Holy Quran competition at Al-Salam Mosque in Hadiboh. The competition was launched since the first week of Ramadan, which was divided into three stages, in which 63 contestants participated in various categories.
During the third and final phase of the competition, 25 contestants in the five categories qualified to compete for the first places. The final day of the competition witnessed honoring the contestants who won the first places in the five levels, in the presence of an official and a number of parents.
Sport
The sport sector in Socotra Governorate also witnessed the organization of the Socotra Seven-side Football and Archipelago volleyball tournaments organized by the Football Federation Office in Socotra with the support of the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation.
The two tournaments started on the 6th of Ramadan, with 18 clubs divided into four groups participating.
Its closing ceremony was held on the night of the twenty-seventh of the blessed month, during which Radfan Club was crowned in the Seven-side Football Tournament after beating Al-Ahly Club 3/4 in penalty kicks after they tied 1-1 in the original time of the match, while Al-Jazeera Club crowned the Ramadan Volleyball Tournament after overcoming it.
On the sidelines of the final of the two tournaments, a competition for the best commentator in football and volleyball was held with the aim of discovering talents and encouraging them to engage in this aspect. Three contestants participated in the competition to comment on the football and volleyball match.
