Major General Salem Abdullah Al Socotri, the Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Fisheries, praised the support provided by the brothers in the United Arab Emirates through the humanitarian and development hand, the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation, for the island and its people, and its keenness to bring out a better reality.
During his visit yesterday to the island, accompanied by the delegation of the ministry and the local authority, the Minister was briefed on the development and service projects implemented by the Khalifa Foundation on the island, including the construction of a dirt runway for aviation, the construction of roads, the drilling of water wells, and the provision of modern equipment for desalination at the level of the island’s villages.
Major General Al Socotri expressed his thanks to the United Arab Emirates for its development projects and humanitarian aid in all governorates, especially in the Socotra Archipelago. He noted the role of the Khalifa Foundation delegate in the archipelago in implementing a large number of projects that the people of the province need.
The Minister had a tour around the areas of Abd al-Kuri Island (Bir al-Agouz, Khissa Saleh, Upper Tawahi, Lower Tawahi and Beit Issa, and heard from the representative of the local authority on the island, Ghaleb al-Jamahi, and the fishermen about their most important needs on the island in the fish sector.
He also visited a number of rainwater harvesting projects, directing specialists in the irrigation sector to rehabilitate and restore two water barriers to benefit from rainwater in the two regions and the neighboring villages.
For their part, the people of Abd al-Kuri Island welcomed the visit of Minister and the ministerial delegation accompanying him, and they visited the areas and villages of Abd al-Kuri Island and listened to the island’s needs.
The Minister was accompanied by Raed Al-Juraibi, the Deputy Governor for Islands Affairs; Engineer Ahmed Al-Zamki, Undersecretary for the Irrigation Sector; Mr. Ghazi Lahmar, Undersecretary for the Fish Production and Marketing Services Sector; Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Khatib, Director General of Animal Health and Veterinary Quarantine; Engineer Ali Al-Shaibani, Director General of Plant Protection; Mr. Anwar Al-Saadi, Director General of Statistics and Planning; Engineer Shukri Khamis, Director General of Irrigation Facilities; Dr. Musaed Al-Qutaibi, Director General of the Minister’s Office; and Ahmed Ali, Director General of the Fisheries Authority Branch.
