The Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation has made tangible and continuous efforts to preserve the natural environment of the island of Socotra and to reduce the excessive logging of rare plants there.
The intervention made by Khalifa Foundation is to provide domestic gas to the island’s residents and work to deliver it to various residential neighborhoods, regions and villages as a service to the Socotra community and to reduce the phenomenon of excessive logging of plants by citizens to be used as cooking fuel after the absence of gas for a period.
Socotra was classified by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2003 as a vital nature reserve, and in 2008 it was classified as a World Heritage Site due to its unique biodiversity.
The people of Socotra were aware of all the efforts made by Khalifa Foundation to provide gas and deliver it to all areas, in addition to the role of that service in alleviating pressure on the island’s plant diversity.
