The agricultural team of the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation inaugurated today the distribution of special bags to cover the palm trunks to farmers in Socotra Governorate for the fifth season in a row.
The distribution process targeted both the Qaisu area in the Qalansiyah district and Abdul Kuri, which is considered one of the most densely populated areas of palm orchards on the island, with the aim of helping farmers maintain their production of dates and protect them from precipitation, especially with the intensification of the monsoon winds on the island.
At the inauguration, the Vice-Chairman of the Development Committee Salem Daheq said that 10 thousand net bags were distributed to palm farmers in the Qaisu area. He pointed out that the netted bags are of importance in facilitating the process of harvesting the wet and maintain the quality of the product and contribute to the process of marketing it better.
Daheq praised the efforts of the Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation, which always pays great attention to farmers and works to encourage them on an ongoing basis.
The agricultural engineer, Iyad Ali Abdellah, confirmed that the inauguration of the process of distributing netted bags today is an extension of the Foundation’s efforts to support farmers in the archipelago to enable them to improve their production of dates.
He added that the experiments that took place during the previous season proved the feasibility of using them in the absence of negative effects on the fruits after placing them inside the mesh bags, especially with regard to ventilation, rotting diseases and acidification, in addition to that the bags reduce the infection of the ripe fruits and attack the birds, as well as they prevent the fruit from falling.
The Sheikh of the Qaisu region, Hassan Muhammad Al-Qaisi, said, “Today, we received 10,000 special mesh bags, covering the taste of palm trees, for farmers in the Qaisu region, with the support of the Khalifa Foundation.”
Sheikh Al-Qaisi confirmed that the support received by farmers in the Qaisu region today comes for the fifth time in a row, and he had a share in helping farmers maintain their production from the precipitation that they have been subjected to during the past years before the Khalifa Foundation intervened to help end this problem in modern ways.
The farmer, Mohammed Rami Abdullah, expressed his sincere thanks to the Khalifa Foundation for its efforts and permanent support for the agricultural sector, which is witnessing a remarkable development on the island. Pointing out that the farmers of the Qaisu area received their share of the support provided to develop the agricultural sector, especially in palm trees and date production.
