Today, a workshop held in Socotra to review the results of the efforts in the control of the red palm weevil, which spread in the orchards of the Archipelago.
The workshop supported, funded and implemented by Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation reviewed the type of the weevil and its risk on the palms in addition to the efforts of the team in controlling the weevil with participation of local experts from the Agriculture Office and General Authority for Environment Protection. The workshop also reviewed the positive results of controlling the spread of the palm weevil and training the farmers.
Engineer Fahmi Al Ghatnani, Director General of Agriculture Office in the Governorate, assured that the campaign helped in saving the agriculture secotr in Socotra, and praised the efforts of Khalifa Foundation in controlling the palm weevil and protecting the farms.
The workshop witnessed number of interventions by the participants aiming at promoting the awareness of the farmers of the risk of the palm weevil and the necessity for monitoring the farms. In turn, the participants praised the role of Khalifa Foundation in different sectors in the Governorate including agriculture and environment system, which was important for food provision for the Archipelago.
The Chief of Development Committee, Sheikh Ali Essa bin Afrar, Salem Daheq, Member at the Committee, and group of sheikhs, farmers and individuals interested in agriculture attended the workshop.
