Qalansiyah is located in Northwest of Socotra, and is considered as the second biggest city in Socotra. It had several names such as Fatk, Qalawa, and now Qalansiyah. The people of Qalansiyah depend on animals and sea products. Therefore, some families include fishermen and others include shepherds.
During a sea voyage with some young fishermen to Shaweb, which was 20 miles away from Qalansiyah, we passed by Qaweher and Garaf Bedoh.
We had a conversation with Captain Salem bin Jalaf, who said that this season was whiting season, which would last during winter. There were specific locations to fish whiting, which fishermen already knew, such as Garaf Bedoh and most of sea mountains.
He added that Qalansiyah has a great competition in this season in relation with reduction of selling prices, as large amounts of fish are being marketed to owners of restaurants in Hadiboh.
